“If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” – Woody Allen. Unfortunately, having a plan in place that covers all scenarios life can throw at you is impossible, but that does not mean you should not prepare for what we know could happen. Having a proper estate plan in place could save you time, money, and stress. We encourage you to use the time you have at home to get your estate plan in order.
A common misunderstanding is that an estate plan is only a tool designed to prepare your property for when you pass. Really, a comprehensive and proper estate plan should not just plan for when you pass, it should also plan for you and your family during your life. A comprehensive plan will prepare you and your loved ones not only for your passing, but for incapacity and other unplanned situations in which you are unable to care or speak for yourself.
Our estate plans include all the documents that allow your property to be managed on your passing, or in case you become incapacitated. For example, a Living Trust includes provisions that allows for someone, who you choose, to step up and manage your property for your benefit in case of you and/or your spouse’s incapacity. Additionally, our estate plans include powers of attorney and medical powers of attorney so that someone you designate can step into your shoes if needed, to assist you in managing your day-to-day needs, such as paying bills and handling financial transactions. Further, should the need arise, a person, or people, you designate can also make medical decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make them yourself.
Even during these uncertain times in dealing and managing Covid-19 (Coronavirus), our firm is ready, willing, and able to meet with you and your family by remote teleconference technologies or good old-fashioned conference calls. A comprehensive estate plan can be started and completed up to the point of signatures without ever meeting in person to keep you safe in the comfort of your home. We will continue to offer free consultations to discuss your individual needs.
During this time of quarantine, spend time thinking about what plans you have in place to plan for yours and your family’s future.
